Card-Check, Anyone?

March 27, 2010

President Obama has now used the “recess appointment” process to place AFL-CIO/SEIU attorney Craig Becker on the powerful NLRB (National Labor Relations Board). A recent Associated Press article by Ben Feller attributes the President’s action to being “fed up with waiting” for the Senate to take action on his nominations. In Becker’s case, this is simply not true. The question of Becker’s confirmation came up in the Senate last February, and failed to garner the required number of votes for cloture. The Republicans were joined by Senator Blanche Lincoln (D–AR) and Senator Ben Nelson (D–NE) in rejecting Becker. The recess appointment was invoked during the Senate’s Easter Break. I don’t think it is much of a stretch from here to having the President invoke recess appointments when the Senators go home for the night.

Some excellent analysis of the reasons for resisting Becker’s appointment can be found in this Heritage Foundation article.

To be fair, I should recognize previous abuses of recess appointments by President George W. Bush and President Bill Clinton.  But, bank robbers can’t get off by claiming they’re not the first ones.

Where can we find a “frugal government” ?

March 26, 2010

“A wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned.  This is the sum of good government.” — Thomas Jefferson

Are Democrats Gracious Winners?

March 25, 2010

I just finished reading the anti-conservative vitriol of readers  commenting on Jack Cafferty’s blog on the CNN site.  The blog was about whether Republicans are guilty of failing to be civil in the public discourse after the loss on the health care debate.  Is is just me, or is this a serious case of the pot calling the kettle black?  I have noticed the same phenomena on the boards on the Fox News web site — many liberal comments name calling etc.   I wonder, what are they doing on the Fox site in the first place?  For that matter, what was I doing on the CNN site?

I’m not making this up.  Here:

Apparently, the folks at Freedomworks noticed this too:

Sick of “Health Care” Talking Points? Let Facts Counter the Drivel!

March 19, 2010

Every time that I turn on the TV, I hear some mindless leftist rhapsodizing on the merits of the “Health Care” legislation and how the end justifies the means. (The means is trampling on the Constitution.)

Well, since the House Committee on Rules has finally made the gobbledygook available I want to issue a challenge.  Read some of it.  Pick any part.  Then come back and tell me that you are now convinced that this legislation will improve your lot in life.  Tell me you find the rosy picture the Obama camp is claiming is in there.

If you are a hard case, try looking at the budget sections.  That’s where this legislation vests new sweeping powers in the IRS. Won’t that be great?
